Peyton Mies found her place in construction by combining classroom learning with real-world experience. After starting college in interior design, an internship with Glassman Corporation helped her discover a stronger interest in construction management. Now studying at Fort Hays State University, Peyton is gaining hands-on experience while preparing for a full-time career in the industry.
Peyton Mies didn’t originally plan on a career in construction management. When she began her studies at Fort Hays State University, she started out as an interior design major. It wasn’t until a CAD class introduced her to an internship opportunity at Glassman Corporation that her direction began to change.
While working as an intern, Peyton discovered she enjoyed the construction side of the industry more than design work. After earning a construction management certificate and spending a year gaining hands-on experience, she made the decision to change her major. Conversations with professors in the construction management program helped confirm that the path aligned better with her interests and strengths.
Balancing school and work, Peyton values being involved in projects from the earliest stages. Seeing a project move from bidding and planning to a finished building—such as schools or hospitals being actively used—has been one of the most rewarding parts of her experience. It’s the full process, from start to finish, that keeps her motivated.
Looking ahead, Peyton plans to continue working at Glassman Corporation while completing her degree, with the goal of transitioning into a full-time role after graduation. Having grown up working alongside her father, a mechanic, she’s comfortable with hands-on environments and problem-solving. For Peyton, construction offers stability, opportunity, and a career path that continues to grow.
